Sandos Caracol Eco Resort - All Inclusive

Updated on

It’s more difficult than you’d think to find a good waterslide; however, Cancún delivers on many fronts – world-class beaches, exhilarating excursions, and some of the most thrilling waterparks in Central America!

Use this guide to map out the coolest waterparks and kid-zones in Cancún, and prepare to knock this getaway out of the park! (Pun intended!)

Pro tip: Most hotels on this list will also offer babysitting at an additional fee, so you can book that extra-long spa day or indulge in some adult-only excursions too.

  1. 1. Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts All Inclusive Riviera Maya

    Best for Young Families

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • Couple-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Beachfront
    • Sustainable property

Why we love it: Thrill-seekers unite! Every detail of this colorful, eco-friendly 5-star resort is thoughtfully designed with all ages in mind. As the most extensive waterpark in Cancún, this playground has slides and obstacle courses for teeny tots all the way up to teenagers. Continue Reading

The standout of the park, Aqua Nick, is the largest project to be created on the property; it includes 11 high-rise waterslides, a splashpad, a RainFortress 5, AquaPlay200, and a full-blown lazy river that wraps around the 9-acre property. Older daredevils may drool at the 59-foot waterslide, Soak Summit Tower, and everyone will marvel at the incredible views overlooking the park’s nearby beach. Read Less

Additional amenities: Only twenty minutes from the Cancún International Airport, this oceanfront property provides a one-of-a-kind experience. Throughout the hotel, Nickelodeon characters make the rounds — perfect for those Instagramable family photo ops! While the little ones are quite literally “getting slimed” by Spongebob and Patrick, mom and dad can enjoy an aromatherapy treatment, yoga glasses, or body wraps at the world-class NÁAY SPA. The family will have 8 restaurants to choose from, so the kiddos can hang at Good Burger while the adults enjoy a meal at the surprisingly grown-up Yacht Club. Continue Reading

Additional amenities include 24-hour in-room dining, a fitness center, oceanview balconies on each room, WiFi, evening entertainment, and community game rooms. Tours about the local culture, water sports, and diving off-site are also available at an additional charge.

We love that this property has taken steps to become a sustainable and eco-friendly resort. As eco-conscious brand owners, we know that these subtle steps of activism make all of the difference. Nickelodeon Resort’s green initiatives include motion-controlled electricity (automatically turns off lights when no one is around), recycled key cards, and reduced plastic use. On a completely voluntary basis, guests can support the cause by opting out of daily room cleanings and towel washings to reduce water waste. Read Less

Keep in mind: These eclectic rooms are flashy, fun, and brightly decorated. If neon lights, foot-long burgers, and 8-foot-tall Patrick statues aren’t your cup of tea, check out Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa – another all-inclusive with a more mature feel.

    Overall:

Compete against friends on the rock wall, cruise down the roll-glider zipline, or take a family cooking class! You will not struggle to fill your itinerary with family-friendly activities like bingo, dance, movie nights, water sports, karaoke, tennis, and much more. Adults can take a little quiet time to enjoy the fitness center and pamper themselves at the full-service spa. Read Less

Keep in mind: Outside of the waterpark, Natura has a very elegant vibe inspired by the nature that surrounds it. You can hike around the property but need to cross a bridge by car to visit other locations. Some guests feel they are a bit isolated from the popular attractions, but we really enjoyed the secluded ambiance. It was part of what drew us to the location and we considered it to be a selling point. Continue Reading

Also, keep in mind that the ocean water in front of Natura may not always be the tropical blue that you expect in Cancún due to the natural run-off from the Mangroves. If you are looking for a more traditional image of Caribbean-style escape, consider a resort with crystal clear waters like The Hyatt Ziva Cancún. Read Less

  3. 3. Sandos Caracol Eco Resort - All Inclusive

Best Overall Crowd Pleaser & Eco-Friendliness

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • Couple-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Private Beachfront
    • Sustainable property

Why we love it: Sandos Caracol Eco Resort simply stands in a league of its own. From nightly fire shows to the sprawling jungles that surround the property, this stay offers ecological activities for the entire family. Take your time soaking up the best of Cancún and Playa Del Carmen with the private beachfront containing 9 restaurants, 2 outdoor pools, and a full-fledged waterpark with 29 waterslides! The aquapark is Sandos Caracol’s most popular attraction, with small, medium, and large waterslides on the property; Height requirements are established for each slide, regardless of your age. (The medium-size slides require a minimum height of 3’7,” and the larger slides for teenagers and adults require a minimum height of 4’7”).

Your smallest babies will be elated in the Kids’ Aqua Park with mini-slides and constant supervision. They can spend the afternoons at the mural-adorned kids club which provides an atmosphere of freedom and learning, while the Entertainment Team organizes special activities throughout the day, every day. Additional Amenities: Parents can release their inner-child on the larger waterslides and then mosey to the spa for yoga or aerobics. Relax at the end of the day with a hot tub soak, onsite salon, steam room, sauna, and restorative solarium. Later, grab dinner at the up-scale hibachi grill, El Templo (or consider your other options of Italian, Mediterranean, American, or Mexican cuisine). Continue Reading

The ‘eco’ in this sustainable ‘eco-lodge’ comes from an elegant combination of regional culture and gorgeous surrounding mangroves. Learn about the myths of the Maya culture on guided walks, safari tours, jade river swims, or kayaking excursions. Your kids will also LOVE connecting to nature as you encourage them to put their hands in the soil and plant a tree, work with the animal keepers, and explore the cenote sinkholes (once believed by the Mayans to be the entrance to the underworld). Your children will hold onto these remarkable memories with historical findings that date back to 750 A.D. Read Less

Keep in Mind: While many guests consider the service of Sandos Caracol to be exceptional, there will always be gaps within perfectionism and hospitality can be subjective. We noticed many guests barely tolerating the longer lines of peak season, but traveling in the Summer is typically more crowded. With this in mind, you may prefer to save money and avoid crowds by booking your vacation during the off-season. Overall, it is reasonably priced, vibrant, gorgeous, environmentally-conscious, and offers you a hub for international flavors and experiences.

Pro Tip: Regardless of the season you visit, many of the onsite restaurants book 1-2 weeks in advance, and showing up alone may not guarantee you a seat. Since these are first-come-first-serve, call 3-4 weeks in advance to ensure legitimate all-inclusiveness!

  4. 4. Royal Solaris Cancún-All Inclusive

Best for Young Children (under 10)

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Beachfront

Why we love it: This neverland of seaside dreams creates endless opportunities for fun for all ages! We recommend this stay for younger children because the full kid’s club will keep your little tots entertained with plenty of adult-only activities for you as well. Continue Reading

Your little ones will be ecstatic as they splash around the mini-waterpark (supervised by counselors at all hours), and they can wear themselves out before mom and dad pick them up! They’ll be blown away by the complete kid’s club, a video game room, sports activities, and a beachside playground. We loved seeing absolute stars in their eyes over the daily themed parties, live music, and shows that leave everyone’s jaws on the floor. Read Less

Additional Amenities: Parents will be ecstatic with the all-day access to the 3 interconnected beachfront swimming pools, ALL meals included at their 5 restaurants, and unlimited beverages served at the 2 bars. You’ll also appreciate the ability to book paid amenities like a full-service spa and sports at an additional fee (windsurfing, tennis, aerobics, and kayaking are all available on the premises, with a golf course only 2-miles out).

Pro Tip: They also allow single parents with multiple children to pay a single occupancy rate, making it accessible for many budgets.

Keep in Mind: Do not expect a ‘romance package’ or quiet rejuvenation at this resort. While many adult travelers are booking without children, this is a more entertainment-centric resort that appeals to the entire family. It can be noisier and more crowded than some guests anticipate. To be frank, if you want a quiet relaxing place, this is not it. If you want a place with endless entertainment that your kids will love, you’ve found a gem!

  5. 5. Dreams Sapphire Resort & Spa - All Inclusive

Best for Teenagers & Parents (Ages 10+)

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • Pet-friendly
    • Couple-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Private Beachfront
    • Sustainable property

Why we love it: This stunning beachfront property appeals to the dreamers. With endless possibilities, you can spend your day in luxurious relaxation, exhilarating adventure, or both! The Dream Sapphire’s waterpark is not to be underestimated with a triple-looped slide that towers over the resort. There is a Kid’s Explorer Club and kids-only pool; however, I would argue that it appeals even more to teenagers and adults because it offers mental stimulation, surprising entertainment, and options that awaken the inner-child in us all.

Additional Amenities: Your kids will be dazzled by the nightly shows, movie nights, and tons of activities to choose from (like archery, tennis, snorkeling, canoeing, windsurfing, biking, etc.) There are 8 restaurants onsite to choose from with global flavors (Mexican, Mediterranean, French, Buffet, Asian, Fine Dining, etc.). Lounge by one of the 3 outdoor pools and enjoy the inclusive drinks at the multiple swim-up bars. End the day with a healing massage and detox wrap before you soak away your troubles in the hot tub. If all of that still leaves you restless, you can dance until midnight at the swanky nightclub! Ultimately, this is the perfect balance of luxury and FUN for every age. Read Less

Keep in Mind: This hotel crushes it when it comes to cleanliness and comfort, but it is worth mentioning that sometimes the beach does get a fair amount of seaweed washing up on shore. The staff does their best to manage this, but if you are wanting a seaweed-free vacay, just know that seaweed season in Cancún typically runs from May through October; Avoiding these periods should spare you from a slimy entanglement! Some guests felt this resort was a bit secluded, but we adore a private oasis experience and actively seek it out. Keep this in mind when determining the right location for your getaway. 6. 6. Hotel Casa Maya (Budget Option)

    Best Value for Your Money

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Private Beachfront
    • Sustainable property

Why we love it: Offering the most impressive local amenities without sacrificing any bang for your buck, Hotel Casa Maya is the best for ‘overall value.’ The unique waterpark includes 2 high-rise slides, medium-sized slides near the hot tub, and a toddler splash park for the littlest ones.

Additional Amenities: At a price that feels 2-star, this 4-star resort delivers on many crucial fronts (location, cleanliness, amenities, cuisine, waterparks!) Offering fantastic views of the Nichupté Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea, this hotel has 4 onsite restaurants, 2 pools (indoor and outdoor), a full spa and fitness center, as well as private beach areas and encompassing gardens. Enjoy wood-fired pizza on the beach and pick up a foot-long margarita (you can also have food and drinks delivered to your personal beach lounger). There is a separate playground on the private beach so you can easily keep an eye on your kiddos from the sand.

There is also a game room so older kids (10+) can enjoy aquatic activities (snorkeling, swimming, fishing), or land activities (archery, mini-golf, ping pong, pool, biking, tennis). Golfing is within 2-miles and available at an additional fee. Read Less

Keep in Mind: While this resort offers undeniable value, you may find a discrepancy between your expectations and what is delivered. Be aware that Casa Maya is one of the older hotels in the area. You may feel ‘you get what you pay for,’ but Casa Maya is not a sacrifice on quality. The nostalgic charms and paradise energy of this place make up for any creaky doors or outdated carpets. We thoroughly enjoy it as an economical option. Do your research and determine if Hotel Casa Maya suits the aesthetic- or amenity-based vision that you have for this trip.

  7. 7. All Ritmo Cancún Resort & Water Park

    Most Affordable Option

    Overall:
    Vibes:
    • Family-friendly
    • All Inclusive
    • Private Beachfront

Why we love it: This immersive and chill escape is the most economical option on this list. This waterpark is a tree-house-jungle-gym with 4 exciting waterfalls and waterslides, drizzling water umbrellas, and an always refreshing bucket of water that refills throughout the day and dumps all over the kiddos on a splashpad! The children’s club sets a tone for fun with an underwater mural and the Entertainment Team puts real creativity into planning the daily activities. Continue Reading

Kiddos will FLIP OUT over kitty Olympics, water balloon fights, treasure hunts, team challenges, and nighttime performances by professional musical artists and Cirque Du Soleil-style acrobats (40+ unique shows per week)! Additional Amenities: Nestled in a private nook near the marina, you can easily book local tours and dine outside of the resort. On the premises, you will have your choice of oceanview or garden view with 5 restaurants, 1 oceanfront pool, and 3 hot tubs. Located in the heart of the hotel district, you will have incredible attractions at your fingertips while still feeling ‘away from the crowds.’ Continue Reading

In the endless excitement, mom and dad can find time to unwind at a couple’s massage or upgrade your experiences for $25 to get the daybeds with elevated food and beverages. The experience is divine and at a reasonable price, these small indulgences and upgrades won’t break the bank. You’re already saving on accommodations and transportation by staying in the center of the action! Read Less

Keep in Mind: If you want to save money at an all-inclusive hotel, this is one of your most economical options. That being said, the real contingencies with this resort lie in planning ahead. For example, if you check in too late, the hotel will not allow you to use the waterpark (which closes by 5 p.m.). If you are leaving the next morning, you may miss out on the waterpark because it does not open again until after checkout time. Avoid this disappointment by booking at least a 2-night stay to ensure your kids will have plenty of time to play!

Pro tip: Based on the busy dinners that we experienced, we highly recommend you book dinner reservations, massages, and any upgrades well in advance. Planning ahead usually pays off and this forethought will help you to avoid any common issues. Continue Reading

Where NOT to Stay in Cancún

Tourists are generally safe in resort-centric towns like Cancún, Cozumel, and Playa Del Carmen. The hotel zone near the beach is safe, but we do not recommend walking around alone late at night. The highest crime rates are specifically in regions 239, 247, 251, 259, and 260, so avoid these areas if possible. Be mindful of certain flea markets or shopping areas, frequently targeted by drug dealers trying to sell the patrons illegal substances.

Besides this, the only major threat to tourists will be pickpocketing. When exploring outside of the resort, always carry a theft-proof neck wallet to keep all of your credit cards and passport concealed beneath your shirt. Also, be aware of your surroundings because of scam artists and merchants (they may use children as a decoy to distract you). Do not wear flashy jewelry or carry expensive valuables. Keep your wits about you and remain close to the main strip.

What to Bring to Cancún

Knowing what to bring to Cancún is essential to enjoy your trip. Below is a short list with some key items not to forget. If you want our more in-depth tips, visit our Cancún packing list or our Mexico packing list.

  • 1. Packing Cubes

Stop rummaging through your luggage, losing items, and never being able to find what you’re looking for! Take an elevated approach with packing cubes – the smart way to condense your items to their smallest form. Consolidate similar items (one cube for shirts, one cube for pants, etc.), and you will be BLOWN AWAY at how this increases your quality of life while traveling. It will also increase the precious real estate in your luggage, making it even more acceptable to do a little shopping in Cancún, wink wink.

  • 2. Universal Waterproof Phone Case

We never visit a coastal town or beach resort without a waterproof phone case. This universal fit provides an effective measure against dropping your phone in the ocean or hotel pool. Sand could also ruin your phone by scratching the lenses, but this super-affordable little case will give you peace of mind wherever you may roam. It also allows you to still use your phone’s touchscreen and take incredible underwater photos and videos with sound! Save money on that underwater camera and work with what you already have.

You will spend A LOT of time in direct sunlight in Cancún so this magical little towel will enhance your travels. Beat the Mexican heat with this secret weapon – a towel that chills itself to 30-degrees below the air’s temperature and will remain cold for 30-60 minutes until you reapply water. Hang it around your neck as you explore the coastal terrain or put it under your hat where no one will know. • 6. Family Beach Bag

A major perk of resort-living is that you have everything you need on hand. But any mom knows you will ALWAYS need a small bag for a child’s necessities. We love this turquoise beach bag because it’s stylish and wildly practical. It has plenty of room with multiple compartments, a cell phone holder, and an insulated cooler bag to keep your drinks cold. Pack along diapers, towels, snacks, or any other essentials that you’ll appreciate having within reach.

  • 7. LifeStraw Water Bottle (Filtered)

As a rule, tap water in Mexico is not safe to drink, but we don’t want to encourage single-use plastic that harms the environment. To save money and never have to buy a water bottle again – carry this LifeStraw bottle with a built-in filter. Don’t take risks with your little ones’ sensitive tummies. Even if the water is clean where you’re traveling, it’s a great idea to run it through this extra layer of protection and ensure your family is protected from foreign bacteria. It will also reduce exposure to potentially harmful viruses, chemicals, and microplastics.

  • 9. Charcoal Detox Tablets

Mexico isn’t known for having the easiest food to digest. With cheesy, saucy, and meat-filled dishes, you may want to take precautions with a natural detoxifier. These activated charcoal supplements are perfectly dosed and will keep stomach bugs at bay. Folks can also get bad food poisoning in Mexico and if you take these it absorbs the bacteria and stops the runs and cramps and vomiting. It works as a magnet in your body to draw out harmful toxins and pathogens that are causing the problem. Don’t let a stomach ache steal momentum from your trip; This is a pre-requisite for any feast and a preventative measure that could save you real distress and discomfort!

  • 10. Travel Insurance for Mexico

Never travel to Mexico without health insurance (in some areas, it is actually required due to COVID-19 mandates), and your domestic plan will not cover you when traveling internationally. Expect the unexpected while Livin’ La Vida Loca and protect yourself against flight cancellations, lost luggage, theft, or other unforeseen circumstances. Our friend had $4,000 of medical bills covered by insurance when he broke both his wrists falling from a bike while traveling in Mexico. Insurance will not only protect you and your children, but also the investment you’ve put into making this vacation special. Don’t risk having to pay a fortune on top of whatever stressful emergency that could ensue. FAQs About Cancún Resort Travel

  • 1. When is the best time to visit Cancún?

In our experience, the best time to visit Cancún for perfect weather is late Winter through Spring (December – April). Temperatures will still be similar to Summer but without the larger crowds and higher hotel rates.

If you wish to visit during the peak season of Summer, keep in mind that hotels will price-gouge during traditional American holidays (when children are out of school for Spring Break, Christmas, and Summer), so anticipate greater crowds and less availability at these times. It is also perfectly in-conjunction with seaweed season, so remember that many hotel beaches are swarmed by this slimy ocean flora.

Even Winter is an ideal time to visit Mexico because temperatures will reside in the temperature zone of 70+°F, and hotel rates will drop.

Ultimately, any time of year is a great time to visit Cancún. Simply consider your goals, budget, and research what excursions will be available at the given time of year (for example, butterfly migration and whale watching are only feasible in January and February).

  • 2. Can I leave the resort?

Yes, you are free to leave the resort at any time, and the concierge will assist you in booking transportation into town or your selected excursions.

We only recommend that you do not go out late at night, especially if you are a single woman. Cancún has a very vibrant nightlife that is worth experiencing; however, don’t drink excessively. Remain coherent since you are in a foreign place and may not know the language.

  • 3. Do I have to tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Tipping is a discretionary and optional gift; however, it is certainly welcomed at resort-style hotels in Mexico. Most guests will tip 10-15% of their final bill, and/or 50-100 pesos for a la carte services like room service delivery (around $2-5 USD).

If the hotel leaves an envelope for you at the end of your stay, this is a subtle gesture to incentivize a tip if you are satisfied. But! Keep in mind that some all-inclusive hotels will automatically add gratuity. Always confirm the distribution of your original payment at the time of booking to ensure you are not tipping twice!

  • 4. What should you wear in Cancún?

Resort life is laid-back and casual. Women should have a selection of stylish swimsuits and prepare for high levels of humidity and heat. If you pack a swimsuit cover-up that you’re comfortable in, this will be the perfect attire for walking around the resort (everyone will be in bathing suits and pants aren’t mandatory until dinnertime!)

Grab some flip-flops or sandals that are easy to walk in, espadrilles are the local equivalent to Sperry flats and are very comfy! You will need an easy pair of flats for walking around the hotel and on the hot sand.

If you’re slipping away for a little nightlife – bring a gorgeous party dress and a pair of strappy heels.

If you cannot live without accessories (I understand!), then I would recommend water-resistant, waterproof, or tarnish-free jewelry that will not be affected by the salty air and humidity. Also, ensure they are not too flashy as you don’t want to draw unnecessary attention to yourself which could result in theft. Avoid this preventable crime and remain hands-free with a theft-proof neck wallet.

Both men and women will be relieved to have a sunhat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. For men – breathable linen shirts, lightweight shorts, and good walking shoes are must-haves.

Regardless of age, gender, or preferences – everyone in Mexico is invited to add a little more color to their wardrobe. This bright and vibrant place is busting at the seams with culture; From the delicious food to the street art to the eclectic textiles. Reflect the energy of this destination and feel welcome to embrace your most vibrant self.

  • 5. What are some local attractions to visit in Cancún?

Attracting more than 4-million tourists each year, Cancún was always destined to be a highly-demanded slice of paradise. Since the town was built with tourism in mind, luxury accommodations and fantastic tours were developed (literally) from the jungle-ground-up!

Mayan Ruins – If you can only choose 1 excursion, book a day at the nearby Mayan Ruin, Chichén Itzá. This preserved piece of history dates back to the 5th century and shows evidence of the ancient Mayans’ ingenuity in commerce, religious architecture, and well-developed homes (truly miraculous given the tools they had at the time). This impressive peek into the past will really resonate with your kids (especially if they are over age 5) and expose them to the interwoven history of humanity that they are apart of.

Nightlife – Cancún is notorious for its outrageous nightlife and buzzing club scene. Punta Cancún is the PARTY ZONE, an epicenter filled with intoxicating clubs and base music that will make the streets vibrate until dawn. I had a great time dancing in this area with my girlfriends, but I recommend that you stay along the main strip and don’t deviate to other neighborhoods. The best clubs are Coco Bongo, RAKATA, H Roof, and Mandala Beach Club. Have some fun – the party doesn’t stop until the sun comes up!

Water Activities – Snorkeling, diving, fishing, and other popular water sports should be available at your all-inclusive resort; confirm through the concierge if you have any questions. If you are looking to get off the beaten path, consider diving off the Isla Mujeres or lounging at the nearest cenote lagoon, Ruta de Los Cenotes Puerto Morelos. You could also book a luxury catamaran and sail off into the sunset.

Downtown – Much better to bring back something handmade or authentic than a touristy souvenir from the hotel gift shop. Spend a morning shopping around the central plaza, stumble upon a street shows in the Riveria, and pick up some local treasures to bring back to your loved ones.
